Excision of a thyroglossal duct cyst

Excision of a thyroglossal duct cyst is a procedure to excise congenital cystic masses of the anterior neck along with its duct while minimizing scarring and preventing inflammatory complications.

Excision of a thyroglossal duct cyst is a procedure to excise congenital cystic masses of the anterior neck along with its duct while minimizing scarring and preventing inflammatory complications. The intervention is indicated for a median neck cyst or fistula formed from the thyroglossal duct during fetal development. Such formations are prone to infection and suppuration and can impair swallowing and speech functions. Under general anesthesia, the surgeon completely excises the cyst and its tracts, removing a portion of the hyoid bone if necessary, to which the cyst is attached. The surgery reduces the risk of recurrence and inflammation, leaving only a neat scar.
