Lung hernia repair is a surgical procedure to eliminate the protrusion of lung tissue through a defect in the thoracic wall, aimed at restoring chest wall integrity and preventing lung damage. The intervention is recommended to patients with the protrusion of lung parenchyma through a defect in the intercostal muscles between the ribs at areas of weakened chest wall (usually after trauma, surgery, or due to congenital causes), leading to pain and strangulation of lung tissue. During the surgery, the hernial sac is freed, and the lung is retracted into the pleural cavity. Then, the chest wall is reinforced with the patient’s own tissues or a synthetic mesh. A restored chest wall allows to alleviate chronic discomfort.
