Chronic kidney disease is a gradual and irreversible loss of the kidney's ability to filter metabolic waste from the blood, regulate fluid and electrolyte balance, and excrete excess fluid. The main causes of chronic kidney failure are diabetes mellitus, hypertension, chronic glomerulonephritis, pyelonephritis, polycystic kidney disease, and congenital anomalies of the kidneys. Early-stage treatment includes blood pressure control, anemia treatment, a low-salt diet, less protein consumption, and treatment of the underlying conditions. When kidney function drops to a critical level, the only option is renal replacement therapy, which includes hemodialysis (blood cleansing), peritoneal dialysis, or kidney transplantation.
