Liver resection (hemihepatectomy)

Liver resection (hemihepatectomy) is a procedure to remove a tumor-affected lobe of the liver, preserving liver function.

Liver resection (hemihepatectomy) is a procedure to remove a tumor-affected lobe of the liver, preserving liver function. The surgery is indicated for primary liver cancer or other metastatic cancer when a large portion of the liver is affected, but the remaining healthy tissue is still capable of fully performing all functions. The surgeon temporarily stops blood flow, isolates, and removes the affected lobe, carefully ligating the blood vessels and bile ducts. The procedure removes all tumor sites, leaving the liver with sufficient healthy tissue for subsequent regeneration and full functional recovery.
