Combined minimally invasive mitral valve surgery and Cox-Maze IV procedure for atrial fibrillation is a single-stage cardiac surgery that addresses two issues through an access point of just a few centimeters. Through an intercostal space, the surgeon repairs the mitral valve, eliminates regurgitation or stenosis, and creates a complex system of radiofrequency lines on the surface of the atria. This system, known as the Maze type IV procedure, blocks the pathological electrical impulses that cause atrial fibrillation. The combination of the two techniques in a single intervention allows the patient to avoid repeated anesthesia and two separate rehabilitations. After the surgery, both intracardiac hemodynamics and heart rhythm are normalized, reducing the risk of stroke and heart failure.
