Open pyeloplasty is a procedure to restore normal urine flow from the kidney by widening or reconstructing the narrowed segment of the ureter. The surgeon repairs a narrowed area and creates a new, wide connection to the kidney. You may need an open pyeloplasty if you have a ureteropelvic junction (UPJ) obstruction, hydronephrosis, or difficulty passing urine. You will regain normal urination and preserve your kidney function.
