Thyroidectomy (head and neck cancer)

Thyroidectomy is a cancer surgery to remove part of the thyroid gland, preserving as much healthy tissue and organ function as possible.

Thyroidectomy is a cancer surgery to remove part of the thyroid gland, preserving as much healthy tissue and organ function as possible. The surgery is indicated for benign nodules (such as thyroid adenomas or nodular goiter) causing discomfort or difficulty swallowing or breathing, as well as for certain early-stage thyroid cancers. Through a small incision in the neck, the surgeon removes the affected lobe or segment of the thyroid gland, taking care to preserve the nerves and parathyroid glands. The surgery eradicates the tumor, and the remaining thyroid tissue continues to produce the necessary hormones.
