Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is a surgery to remove large and complex kidney stones through a microscopic incision in the lower back. Under ultrasound or X-ray guidance, the surgeon inserts a nephroscope, then breaks the stone, and removes the fragments. The procedure is indicated for large (over 2 cm), staghorn, or high-density renal stones that cannot be removed by other methods. The surgery eradicates urinary obstruction, eases pain, and prevents the risk of kidney loss.
