Oocyte cryopreservation is a method for preserving female fertility in which eggs are extracted, frozen, and stored in liquid nitrogen. The procedure is indicated for women who wish to delay motherhood for personal or medical reasons (e.g., before cancer treatment), those who are at risk of premature ovarian failure, and for oocyte donors. The rapid freezing technique (vitrification) preserves eggs for many years with no loss of quality. As a result, a woman can use her own healthy eggs in the future to conceive when she is ready.
