Fertility preservation in cancer patients is a series of medical procedures for preserving reproductive material (eggs, sperm, or ovarian tissue) before beginning aggressive anticancer therapy that may compromise fertility. The program is indicated for men and women of reproductive age, as well as children with cancer, prior to chemotherapy or radiation therapy. Depending on the situation, patients may be offered cryopreservation of oocytes, embryos, sperm, or ovarian tissue, with the possibility of later transplantation. The end result is the preservation of biological material for future parenting, preserving the opportunity to create a family after remission.
