Microsurgery for Arnold‑Chiari malformation is a surgical procedure to relieve compression of the brainstem and restore normal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) circulation. During the intervention, the surgeon removes bone structures compressing the cerebellum and brainstem and opens the dura mater to create space for unimpeded CSF outflow. The procedure is recommended for patients with Chiari malformation complicated by syringomyelia (cysts in the spinal cord), which causes progressive limb weakness and sensory disturbances. As a result, dangerous brainstem compression is relieved, and normal CSF drainage is restored.
